What is logistics radiofrequency used for?

Modified on: 10/07/2025

Radiofrequency has arrived to replace barcodes. Learn more about this technology and how it can benefit logistics operations!

When you go to buy something, it is quite common for the person at the checkout to record the purchase and the amount using the barcode, right? Although this is one of the most common practices in our daily lives, it may soon be replaced by RFID.

The acronym in English stands for Radio Frequency Identification. RFID tags are a faster and simpler alternative to barcodes, whose main objective is to contribute to the management of the flow of materials in all links of the supply chain.

After all, even though the use of bar codes is considered positive by more than 90% of companies, data from the Brazilian Automation Association states that 88% consider that RFID identification technology facilitates administration.

Next, you will understand How RFID works in logistics and how warehouses can benefit from this technology.

What is RFID and how does it work in logistics?

THE radio frequency system uses electromagnetic waves to transmit data in real time, without the need for human or visual intervention. This technology identifies, tracks and manages various products, which is why it is so widely used in logistics chain management.

Its first use was during World War II, when British forces used RFID tags to distinguish enemy aircraft. Today, the radio frequency system It is used in proximity cards for access to buildings and public transport or in various objects to prevent theft.

You must be wondering How RFID works in logistics, and the answer is quite simple. In general, this system consists of an antenna, responsible for reading the signal. It transfers the information to a reading device and to a radio frequency tag, which must contain the circuit and the information to be transmitted.

The antenna then emits the signal from the integrated circuit to transmit its information to the reader, which in turn converts the RFID radio waves into digital information. Once converted, they can be read and their data analyzed.

What are the advantages of RFID?

In addition to knowing How RFID works In logistics, it is necessary to understand the benefits that this system brings to the warehouse. It mainly works in inventory control, as radio frequency system present in the products allows analysts and managers to have complete reports, minimizes the chance of errors and eliminates the need for time-consuming and manual monthly balances.

The main benefits of logistics radiofrequency are:

– Item tracking, preventing theft and/or counterfeiting of goods;

– High capacity for storing, reading and sending data;

– Durability and possibility of reusing labels;

– Agility in the shipping process;

– Control of goods in stock.

With this article, we hope you have understood How RFID works and how this technology can be advantageous within logistics operations. To learn more about how to enhance the warehouse where you work, keep following Bertolini's blog!
