Safety signage: what is it?
Signage is necessary in all work environments. It indicates emergency exits and the location of important items, such as fire extinguishers and fire hoses. In a warehouse, this importance is even greater, as safety signage in the warehouse helps prevent accidents.
Signage means marking out operating locations, safety zones and where certain machines will be located. In parking lots, for example, drivers need to know where to park and where the product receiving area is.
How to implement safety signage in the warehouse?
There are some rules to guide managers in safety signage in the warehouse. The standards 15.524-2/2008 Brazilian standard ABNT (Brazilian Association of Technical Standards) regulation 7195:2018 provides guidance on floor markings and the use of different colors for both panels and ground line markings. Each color has its own meaning:
Red is a prohibition sign, used to signal fire-fighting materials and equipment. It also indicates dangerous behavior, mandatory stop and evacuation.
Yellow is a warning/danger or attention sign.
Blue signals the obligation of specific actions, such as the use of personal protective equipment.
Green indicates rescue or assistance. Suitable for doors, exits, passages, equipment, first aid kits, rescue or aid stations and facilities. It is also used for security situations, return to normality.
Obstacles and dangerous places also need to be indicated, so that employees know which areas are likely to encounter obstacles, objects, and people falling. For this function, the most common is to use yellow and black stripes or red and white stripes.
Another point of attention is vehicle routes. These must be clearly identified by visible colored stripes, preferably white or yellow, taking into account the color of the terrain.
