What are Mobile Base Systems and how to use them in a warehouse?

  • Published in: 12/12/2019

A system that facilitates logistical processes within a company, optimizing and reducing the cost of storing goods.

What are Mobile Bases?

Mobile storage units are a practical and safe storage method for logistics operations involving the storage of goods.

It is a system that features flexible structures, meaning they move automatically and are controlled directly from the forklift or integrated into a Warehouse Management System (WMS).

Installed on an automated base, it moves horizontally on reinforced rails, allowing the entire structure to move while leaving only one aisle available for the forklift operator to enter and perform handling operations.

Therefore, it is configured as a very effective storage system in terms of making the most of warehouse space.

Where is the Mobile Base System used?

The Mobile Storage System is applicable in various sectors of a company whose operations are based on item storage; that is, it is intended for order picking areas, production buffer zones, long-term storage areas, and cold storage chambers.

Furthermore, this is a system that is being used more and more by organizations because it offers improvements and optimization in the storage area, since Mobile Storage Units are characterized by significantly reducing the square footage required and increasing storage density, as well as promoting faster and more effective access for the employees who work there.

This is a technologically advanced and easy-to-use system, always aiming for practical storage solutions that are achieved through a system comprised of rails, bases, and racking structures.

How does this system work?

Regarding the operational methods of the mobile base system, it includes the possibility of manual picking at ground level, operating through electric reach trucks and automated systems.

Regarding the procedure for storing goods, the turnover rate of this inventory varies from medium to high product turnover, with a large number of SKUs. Furthermore, the characteristics of the types of goods refer to heavy and bulky items.

Throughout the entire logistics process carried out within the warehouse, whether in the storage or retrieval of goods, light barriers – in accordance with NR 12 standards – ensure the safety of operators and handling equipment.

NR 12 (Regulatory Standard for the Safety of Machinery and Equipment) is a Brazilian standard created to ensure that these operations occur safely and effectively within the warehouse.

The purpose of the standard is to protect all employees; therefore, the equipment used during logistics processes is equipped with emergency stop buttons, luminous access barriers, manual release systems, distance sensors, and a complete safety system, all clearly marked with a specific color to alert the operator. This ensures a flawless and accident-free operation.

Furthermore, circulation and material storage areas, as well as spaces around machinery, must be designed, sized, and maintained in such a way that workers and mechanized and manual material handlers can move safely.

What advantages does the Mobile Base System offer?

When integrated into a warehouse, a mobile shelving system provides excellent use of storage space, as its functionality is based on a structure with considerable height, width, and depth, featuring mobile aisles. This allows for optimal use of all available space and optimizes company organization.

When the goal is to increase the utilization of existing space, or reduce the space occupied by goods storage, the mobile racking system is the ideal solution, as it integrates with pallet racking, cantilever racking, and other special storage options.

Mobile storage systems, when compared to other solutions operated by forklifts, for example, stand out because, in addition to doubling the storage capacity of the same space, they reduce the investments that would be necessary for a new warehouse.

This reduction is even more important when considering the costs of cooling or freezing in cold storage chambers, where the goal is to maximize the efficiency of this system and minimize the empty space in the cold storage chamber.

Therefore, this is a modern management system that ensures an efficient flow of products through an intelligent concept and optimized operational planning.

Bertolini Mobile Bases feature state-of-the-art technology and safety features that comply with Brazilian standard NR 12, guaranteeing maximum practicality, reliability, and safety.

Based on this, it is a system that stands out for offering certain advantages to companies that choose to incorporate it into their warehouse, such as optimal use of available space, high storage capacity, reduced construction costs, and increased storage capacity of up to 100% compared to traditional pallet racking.

In this way, it ensures a greater flow of products, favoring logistical processes through a technological and innovative structure for the storage of goods.

It offers cost-effective advantages through the increased number of pallets stored, as the mobile base system stands out compared to three different pallet racking models. Check it out:

Conventional Pallet Truck

With an operational aisle of 3.2 meters and 6 pallet levels, for example, it operates with a storage capacity of 1008, using only 40% of space.

Narrow Aisle Pallet Rack

Combined with operational aisle structures of 1.8 meters and 6 pallet levels, for example, it has a storage capacity of 1680. Thus, it provides the company with 51% of space utilization and an increase in capacity of 67%.

Pallet Rack with Movable Bases

In operations with a 3.2-meter operational aisle and 6 pallet levels, for example, it reaches 2016 in storage capacity. Furthermore, the company offers 75% in space utilization and 100% in increased capacity.

Solutions like this, developed from the technical expertise of the Bertolini team, are ideal for companies seeking high performance in their logistics operations.
