Logistics efficiency in storage systems

When walking through the aisles of stores and supermarkets, we rarely realize that products travel a long way before reaching the shelves and gondolas.
When we walk through the aisles of stores and supermarkets, we rarely realize that products travel a long way before reaching the shelves and shelves. Before they are available for our consumption, they are produced, stocked, stored, moved, transported, and, in short, they are part of a huge chain of logistics processes. And rest assured, the best suppliers are those that offer logistics efficiency. These two magic words make all the difference in the complex market storage system, essential for products to be offered in an appropriate manner to the end consumer.

Logistics efficiency can be understood as a company's ability to effectively manage its storage and product movement processes, based on benchmarks, available technologies and the environment in which the company operates. When we focus on storage, this efficiency is reflected in the proper management of the materials needed for the company's operations, ensuring the availability of quantities, location and practicality of movement. This is essential so that processes adjacent to storage, such as production or shipping, for example, are met without interruptions due to lack of material, lack of storage space or errors in the location/separation of items and orders.

Process mapping
When focusing on the logistical efficiency of a company's storage, it is important to map the processes that depend on storage, both supplying it and consuming its stock. This mapping is necessary to ensure the adequacy and proper functioning of what we call the “production buffer”. However, this analysis must avoid oversizing the storage area, so as not to add unnecessary initial costs, with the acquisition of the warehouse, storage structures and forklifts, as well as in the operation, with items such as lighting, forklifts (fuel/energy), maintenance, etc.

Research shows that, on average, companies spend the equivalent of 9% of their net revenue on logistics and storage costs. Correctly defining and monitoring indicators allows a company to reduce its costs, focusing both internally, to optimize its own processes, and externally, to make operations more competitive in an increasingly demanding and competitive market.

Logistics efficiency indexes
Different indicators can be used to assess the logistics efficiency indexes of stock and/or logistics warehouse. Among them, some common indicators stand out:

- Productivity
This indicator measures the production/separation rate of each operator or sector, such as pallets/hour/forklift operator.

– Orders in compliance
Measures the number of orders separated without errors, in relation to the total number of orders.

– Lead time
Measures the total time between an order being placed and its dispatch.

– Capacity used
Measures the percentage of available storage positions that are actually used over time.

– Shipments per day
Measures the number of trucks dispatched per day.

Bertolini Solutions
Now that we know the main processes related to logistical efficiency in storage, it is time to highlight the products and services that Bertolini Sistemas de Armazenagem offers to this segment that is so important for the economy's performance. Bertolini offers the entire line of storage systems that are well-established in the national and international markets, and has an optimized production chain focused on quality, service and reliability.

Bertolini's solutions meet the most diverse demands, whether for small operations or for strategies that require a more complex structure. Starting with the well-known Pallet Truck, low cost and an ally for all types of operations, through to the Dynamic and its FIFO (first in – first out) operation optimized for the control of items with expiration dates or high turnover, up to the Self-Supporting Stacker Crane, in which the automated 100% operation guarantees precision and agility to the operation.

Industry statistics indicate that less than 30% of companies have some type of automation within their storage area. The gateway to this automation is the WMS (Warehouse Management System), offered by Bertolini, which manages the movement, stock and orders of a warehouse, and is recommended for companies of all sizes.
