5 steps to reduce costs in the logistics process

  • Published in: 05/08/2022

Warehouse managers must constantly consider how to reduce logistics costs. This is the only way to maintain the company's financial health and ensure it has a competitive edge.
However, there's no need to sacrifice jobs to cut logistics costs. Bertolini has put together five tips on how to identify and eliminate unnecessary expenses in your daily production:

1. Know your logistics costs

Before you start thinking about cost reduction in logistics, it is necessary to know which factors affect financial health.

Remember that logistics encompasses warehousing, material handling, inventory, and transportation. Each of these stages has its own budget, and understanding which categories have the highest logistics costs is the first step toward reducing costs.

2. Have good storage solutions

Managers need to understand that the lowest price doesn't always translate into reduced logistics costs. In many cases, cheap can end up being expensive.

When finding suppliers of storage solutions, what matters is the cost-benefit ratio. It's not just a question of price. Factors such as developing and acquiring the most suitable storage solution for the company's logistics operations, optimal use of the storage area (storage capacity), compliance with current regulations, adequate raw materials (structural steel), durability, and safety must be taken into consideration.

3. Invest in process automation

Unfortunately, many managers avoid investing in process automation because they believe it's an unnecessary expense. In situations like this, logistics cost analysis needs to focus on medium and long-term returns.

THE automation promotes efficiency within the operational flow, as it allows for more production while spending less. Another advantage is the reduction of accidents and human errors, which end up negatively impacting the company's financial health.

4. Set goals and limits

Another common mistake in cost reduction in logistics is not setting goals for the process. Without them, teams lack the necessary information and quickly become demotivated.

Therefore, it's crucial to share logistics cost targets with everyone in the company, not just managers. Share progress with the entire company and open a communication channel with teams to learn what they suggest for reducing costs.

5. Forecast demand

One of the logistics costs One of the most common is overproduction—those who don't understand market demands may end up producing more than they should. This generates wasted materials, and, depending on the industry, the final product is quickly discarded, causing further losses.

Therefore, it's important to understand the seasonality of production. Analyze sales over the past few years and determine when deals closed the most and least. Note the patterns observed and develop a strategic plan focused on these. cost reduction in logistics from then on.

We hope these tips help you cost reduction in logisticsIf you want to learn more about the importance of storage in this process, contact Bertolini!
